The SPU 124 modernizes the classic SPU design with several optimizations designed for optimum compatibility to the new Thorens TD 124 DD. The SPU 124 features a revised generator system which allows for a maximum output of 0.5 mV, relaxing the requirement for high gain transformer or active preamplification systems. While still making use of a highly polished Nude Elliptical stylus, the stylus tip mass has been reduced significantly, resulting in reduced VTF and higher tracking ability.

The SPU 124 features a revised generator system that allows a maximum output of 0.5 mV and reduces the requirements of high-gain transformers or active phono preamplifiers. While still using a highly polished bare elliptical stylus, the mass of the pen tip has been significantly reduced, resulting in reduced VTF and greater tracking ability.
The THORENS SPU 124 is a special version of the legendary Ortofon SPU sound box that is designed for optimal scanning behavior in combination with the THORENS TD 124 DD drive and the newly developed 124 tonearm. The generator, i.e. the “motor” of the pickup, has been completely revised and the output voltage has been increased to 0.5mV (5cm/sec). This measure reduces the subsequent amplification of the signal and reduces interference. A highly polished, reduced-mass, elliptical-cut “naked diamond” enhances the pickup’s tracking ability.
