Design Isn’t Everything, It’s the Only Thing

HT/1510 Predator confidently delivers massive upgrades in design elegance, performance and execution of every detail in cabinet design. Beauty, in this case, isn’t skin deep. We start by using right-sized cabinetry, beautifully executed in horizontally line-grained black with a subtle sheen that evokes state of the art amplifiers. This brings to the HT range the same sleek, elegant proportions used in our Reference models at a fraction of the price. Employed inside each HT/1510, it cradles the rear of the driver to eliminate shipping damage, quiets and redirects energy normally trapped in the driver, and quiets top, bottom and both sidewalls of the cabinet. There is simply something special about a large driver effortlessly distributing bass that small subs working hard can never match. At the heart of every REL lies a truly great driver. HT/1510 Predator’s 15” (380mm) driver retains the combination of glass fiber and carbon fiber center cap that allows quick, reactive bass with slam that is the hallmark of great theatre sound. The lightweight glass fiber allows the 3” (75mm) voice coil to accelerate HT/1510 Predator’s cone instantly, while the carbon fiber center cap stiffens the composite structure, ensuring that even in the biggest of moments, its cone structure remains intact and un-phased by massive signals. Where previous special editions have used existing cabinets, drivers and filters, Carbon Special uses many elements developed solely for Carbon Special. We employed our newest BlackWidow 12”(350mm) carbon fibre driver, developed to deliver superior dynamic balance throughout the full range of its considerable 4”(100mm) of fore-and-aft stroke. It is better able to handle, smoothly and effortlessly, the massive power needed to deliver explosive dynamics. We mated it with our NextGen 5 up to 1,000 watt amplifier which has proven to be both a sonic wonder and utterly reliable. Directing all this is a CS PerfectFilter, a custom-designed variant of our latest evolution of filters that improves both ends of the spectrum. It delivers airy, delicate highs with greater reach into the nether regions within a soundstage, as well as truer, more powerful ultra-low bass delivery. If it sounds too good to be true, it almost is.

We didn’t stop there. The cabinet extends deeper than previous mid-chassis designs to optimize performance for this new driver complement. And its looks are delivered in a refined, mature manner with subtle use of carbon fibre details sprinkled among chrome and polished stainless accents. Elevating low bass performance and overall clarity

Perfect is not a word REL throws around lightly but these latest filters are so good they require its use. Our PerfectFilters elevate the low bass performance to a new standard for a mid-chassis design, while subtle tweaks to its upper range performance allow for an airier, more transparent soundstage and improved clarity throughout the entire system’s performance. Inspired by the G/1 MK II

The key to Carbon Special’s amazing performance is its new BlackWidow 12”(350mm) forward firing active driver. Carbon fibre grabs the headlines with its ultra-lightweight and tough, resilient nature. Carbon fibre, while light, has excellent self-quieting properties that allow for far greater dynamics because the driver itself is so quiet. This generation 3 version features a much larger surround to better allow the explosiveness needed to set itself apart from the pack. The inner suspension was re-tuned to take advantage of this and the result, found only here and upcoming versions of the G-1 MK II is a 12” that hits like a heavyweight but reacts like a much smaller driver.

Power matters, and especially when our CS PerfectFilter demands more from the driver, additional power is crucial. This is why we placed the heart of our flagship No.25 amplifier into Carbon Special. At up to 1,000 watts, it has the current reserves to easily keep up with the demands placed upon it by even the most rigorous user. No.32’s NextGen 7 Class D 1,000 watt amplifier also lives inside No.31, only limited to 900 watts to ensure the perfect complement to the 12” bass engine within No.31. This allows the maximum dynamics to be delivered while ensuring a long, cheerful life for both components. Here too, the LimitLess Limiter, which permits the amplifier to tiptoe right up to its limit without audible compression is part of the magic, conveys a rhythmically effortless quality. Also, its dual parametric filters allow precise micro-tuning; the deepest bass is slightly reinforced, while the upper ranges of bass can be gently trimmed to ensure a brilliantly rendered transition from bass to the main speaker. The electronic design of the reference range is itself artistry.

Drive This

The incredible excursion of the 12” pure carbon fibre driver allows it to play as loud as its larger stablemate. Yet, the No.31 possesses the tactility, nimbleness, and attack that only the greatest subwoofers have ever been able to deliver. It is often said that form follows function. If that is true, what a lovely function we are following. The cabinet traces a curvilinear path established over a decade ago on the original Gibraltar. Here, the top surface tumbles down at the rear corners – a difficult treatment to execute, but one that produces a uniquely beautiful effect.

Triple-plated steel handles are inset into ellipses that allow for a secure grip, which is necessary when lifting an object over 200 pounds. Inside, the rear backing plate is well over half an inch thick and contoured to follow the inner surface, yielding a massively strong structure.

No.32’s new badge treatment combines the materials that appear most frequently within its design; the carbon fibre used throughout the driver is inset within a polished, cast alloy basket that is finished in 3 layers of plating to achieve a jewel-like sparkle. The overall design speaks to the remarkable efforts that went into ensuring No.32 is as striking visually as it is technically.

The Utterly Reliable Beast

No.32’s NextGen 7 Class D 1,000 watt amplifier was also used in its predecessor for over seven years. Thousands of these amplifiers are in use all over the world; they are a paragon of reliability. Its implementation in No.32 combines a new limiter with a much wider envelope to permit the widest dynamic swings possible. Also, No.32’s dual parametric EQs allow for robust and flat response in the lowest ranges, extending below 20 Hz. When its second EQ is set to frequencies above the crossover point, No.32 meshes perfectly with the main speakers while simultaneously reducing room-based resonances.

Drive On

As with all REL’s, No. 32’s heart and soul is its 15” (380mm) driver. The driver’s cone is constructed entirely of carbon fibre. Additionally, a carbon fibre center cap is overlaid on the primary cone surface. This cone design results in a far stiffer driver that possesses superior self-damping qualities, removing even minor resonances that can obscure detail retrieval whilst keeping moving mass to an absolute minimum. No.32’s driver suspension permits a full 4” (100mm) of travel fore and aft, an enormous amount of travel for such a large driver. These are some of the secrets to its performance. Transparency, allied to tremendous dynamics, is the result.

Part of the JBL Synthesis subwoofer series, the SSW-3 is an ultra-high-performance passive in-wall subwoofer acoustically designed to complement any of the JBL Synthesis Custom Loudspeakers (SCL series) as part of a complete JBL Synthesis solution. The SSW-3 features dual 10-inch (250mm) cast-frame, composite cone woofers, each with large 2.5-inch (63mm) voice coils for total system power handling of 600W RMS. A compression-molded baffle with extensive structural ribbing provides a rigid, low-resonance mounting surface for the transducers. The baffle assembly attaches to the included in-wall enclosure resulting in a completely sealed acoustic suspension design. The in-wall enclosure is constructed of 0.75-inch (19mm) MDF with substantial internal bracing and features rubber isolation mounting points to minimize sonic intrusion into the wall structure.
