Description

Musical Fidelity M6xi Integrated Amplifier

The Musical Fidelity M6xi is a powerful high-end integrated amplifier developed as the successor to the long-running M6si. It retains Musical Fidelity’s emphasis on high-current analogue amplification while introducing substantially improved connectivity, including HDMI eARC, optical and coaxial digital inputs, USB-C audio, MM/MC phono capability and system integration features.

220 Watts per Channel

The M6xi delivers 220 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 320 watts per channel into 4 ohms with both channels driven at 1% THD. Across the full 20 Hz–20 kHz audio bandwidth at 0.09% THD, output remains 210 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 300 watts into 4 ohms.

Peak output reaches 280 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 450 watts into 4 ohms, while peak-to-peak current capability is rated at 45 amps. These substantial reserves allow the amplifier to maintain control with demanding loudspeakers and cope confidently with difficult impedance loads.

Fully Discrete Power Amplification Derived from TITAN

The M6xi uses two fully discrete monoblock power amplifier sections within a single chassis. Its low-distortion Darlington output stage is derived from technology developed for Musical Fidelity’s reference TITAN amplifier and is designed to minimise crossover artefacts while maintaining very low residual distortion.

A revised PCB layout reduces circuit imbalance and therefore reduces the need for corrective feedback. The amplifier also uses analogue power supplies during operation to minimise high-frequency noise and electromagnetic interference.

Oversized Toroidal Power Supply

A large encapsulated toroidal transformer provides the power reserves required by the amplifier’s high-current output stages. The internal architecture is designed to maintain strong dynamic performance during demanding musical passages while keeping sensitive analogue circuitry isolated from unwanted electrical interference.

Low-Noise Analogue Preamplifier

The preamplifier section is designed around a low-noise analogue signal path. Volume adjustment is handled by a high-quality Burr-Brown stepped attenuator, providing more accurate channel matching than a conventional potentiometer and helping maintain stable stereo imaging even at lower listening levels.

MM and MC Phono Stage

A dedicated phono stage supports both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges. The revised PCB layout, improved isolation and additional shielding are designed to reduce noise and distortion, allowing the M6xi to be connected directly to a wide range of turntables without requiring a separate phono preamplifier.

HDMI eARC for TV Integration

HDMI eARC makes it possible to connect a compatible television directly to the M6xi and use a high-quality stereo loudspeaker system for television, films and streaming services. This allows the amplifier to become the centre of a system used for both serious music listening and everyday television sound.

High-Resolution Digital Inputs

The M6xi provides coaxial and optical S/PDIF inputs together with a USB-C digital input. Digital audio resolutions up to 24-bit/192kHz are supported, allowing computers, network transports and other digital sources to be connected directly to the amplifier.

The digital circuitry is located on dedicated boards designed to minimise the transfer of high-frequency noise into the analogue amplification stages.

Balanced XLR and RCA Connectivity

Four stereo RCA line inputs are joined by a balanced XLR input, providing flexible connectivity for both conventional and balanced analogue sources. A fixed-level line output and variable preamplifier output are also provided.

The variable pre-out can be used with an additional power amplifier for bi-amplification or with an active subwoofer, while the fixed line output can feed a recorder or dedicated headphone amplifier.

Home Theatre Bypass

A dedicated home theatre bypass input allows the M6xi to operate as the power amplifier for the front left and right loudspeakers in a multi-channel home cinema system. In this mode, volume is controlled by the connected AV receiver or processor while the M6xi provides high-quality amplification for the main stereo speakers.

Dedicated USB Power Output

A 5V/2A USB-A power output can supply compatible external streamers and other low-power digital devices. Musical Fidelity uses a dedicated linear power supply arrangement for this output, providing a convenient way to add a compact network streamer without requiring another external power adapter.

System Integration

An RS232 connection allows the M6xi to be integrated into custom control installations, while trigger connections simplify coordinated power control with other compatible components.

Substantial All-Metal Construction

The M6xi follows Musical Fidelity’s traditional heavy-duty mechanical design, using a rigid metal chassis and substantial aluminium panels. Besides providing physical rigidity, the metal enclosure also helps shield the internal circuitry from electromagnetic interference.

With powerful analogue amplification, balanced connectivity, MM/MC vinyl playback, high-resolution digital inputs and practical home cinema integration, the Musical Fidelity M6xi is designed to serve as the central amplifier in a serious stereo system while remaining flexible enough for modern digital and television sources.
