Silent Angel Rhein ZX is the flagship digital source in the Silent Angel range, created as a complete high-end platform for music storage, streaming, Roon and pure digital audio transport. Rather than functioning as a conventional network streamer, Rhein ZX combines powerful server hardware, extensive local storage, audiophile-grade clocking, a dedicated linear power supply and a comprehensive range of digital outputs in a single purpose-built component.

Designed for serious digital audio systems, Rhein ZX can operate as a Roon Server, local music server and high-resolution digital transport feeding an external DAC through USB, I²S, AES/EBU, coaxial or optical connections.

Powerful Music Server Architecture

At the heart of Rhein ZX is an Intel Core i5-12450H processor with eight cores and twelve processing threads. This gives the system substantial performance headroom for large music libraries, Roon operation, real-time processing and demanding high-resolution audio playback.

Memory configurations of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB are available, allowing the system to be matched to the size and complexity of the intended digital music environment.

Built-In Roon Server

Rhein ZX includes native Roon Server functionality, eliminating the need for a separate computer or conventional NAS to run a Roon library. Its powerful processor provides sufficient resources for library management, DSP processing, real-time transcoding and system-wide upsampling.

The platform can also support simultaneous lossless playback to multiple endpoints, making Rhein ZX suitable not only for a reference two-channel system but also for sophisticated multi-room installations.

Studio-Grade OCXO Master Clock

A studio-grade ±0.05 ppm OCXO oven-controlled crystal oscillator provides the timing reference for the digital audio architecture. By maintaining highly stable clock operation, Rhein ZX is designed to minimise jitter and preserve the timing accuracy of high-resolution digital signals.

A 25MHz BNC external clock input is also provided, allowing Rhein ZX to be integrated with a compatible external master clock when required.

XMOS XU316 High-Resolution Digital Output

Silent Angel uses the latest-generation XMOS XU316 asynchronous digital architecture for its high-resolution USB signal path. Dedicated low-noise power regulation and carefully separated circuit sections are designed to minimise electrical interference and maintain signal integrity.

USB and I²S digital outputs support PCM resolutions up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD512, providing an exceptionally capable interface for compatible high-end DACs.

Comprehensive Digital Connectivity

Rhein ZX provides a wide selection of digital outputs, allowing it to integrate with virtually any high-quality external DAC. USB and I²S support the highest available resolutions, while AES/EBU, coaxial and optical outputs provide PCM playback up to 24-bit/192kHz.

This flexibility allows Rhein ZX to serve as the digital front end of both contemporary USB/I²S-based systems and more traditional high-end DAC installations.

Dual NVMe Storage Architecture

A built-in 500GB high-speed NVMe SSD provides local music storage from the outset. A second M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 ×4 slot accepts compatible 2280 SSDs with capacities up to 8TB, allowing an extensive high-resolution library to be stored directly inside the unit.

Keeping the music library within the server can simplify the system architecture and reduce dependence on separate computers or NAS devices.

Physically Isolated Dual LAN Architecture

Rhein ZX incorporates two physically isolated Gigabit Ethernet paths. Silent Angel separates high-resolution audio traffic from background system operations in order to reduce the influence of external network noise and maintain stable data transmission.

This approach reflects Silent Angel’s long-standing focus on optimising every part of the digital audio network rather than treating Ethernet connectivity as a purely conventional computer interface.

Integrated Linear Power Supply

An audiophile-grade AC linear power supply is built directly into the Rhein ZX chassis. Silent Angel combines it with a dedicated low-noise power matrix that supplies the different digital and processing sections independently, helping reduce noise at its source.

This integrated architecture eliminates the need for an external switching power adaptor and makes the ZX a complete high-end digital source in a single chassis.

Fanless Copper Cooling System

Rhein ZX is completely fanless. Instead of conventional PWM-controlled cooling fans, a CNC-machined pure-copper heatsink works together with the aluminium chassis as a large passive cooling structure.

The absence of moving cooling components eliminates mechanical fan noise and helps minimise electromagnetic interference while allowing stable continuous operation.

Selectable Grounding for Complex Hi-Fi Systems

A dedicated ground terminal and selectable Ground / Floating mode allow Rhein ZX to adapt to different system configurations. This can help reduce ground-loop noise and mains-frequency hum in complex multi-component installations.

VitOS and Extensive Streaming Support

Rhein ZX runs Silent Angel’s dedicated VitOS platform and integrates a broad range of network playback options. Supported services and protocols include Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, Amazon Music HD, AirPlay 2, DLNA Renderer, HQPlayer NAA and Roon Server.

Silent Angel’s VitOS ecosystem provides access to both online streaming services and locally stored music, making the ZX a comprehensive digital control centre for a modern high-end audio system.

Reference-Level Construction

The full-width chassis is manufactured from 6061 aluminium alloy using a dual-layer 5 mm construction. Combined with the substantial internal copper heatsink and 9.4 kg gross weight, the mechanical design is considerably more substantial than Silent Angel’s compact Rhein music servers.
