Musical Fidelity M5xi Integrated Amplifier

The Musical Fidelity M5xi is a high-performance integrated amplifier developed as a major evolution of the successful M5si. Its preamplifier, power amplifier, digital and phono sections have all been redesigned, bringing the M5xi considerably closer to the circuitry used in Musical Fidelity’s larger M6xi and the company’s reference TITAN amplifier.

160 Watts per Channel with High Current Capability

The M5xi delivers 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 240 watts per channel into 4 ohms at 1% THD, providing substantial reserves for driving a wide range of loudspeakers. Across the full 20 Hz–20 kHz audio bandwidth at 0.09% THD, output remains an impressive 140 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 210 watts into 4 ohms.

Peak current capability reaches 45 amps peak-to-peak, giving the amplifier the reserves required to maintain control when loudspeaker impedance falls or musical dynamics demand sudden bursts of power.

Amplifier Technology Derived from TITAN

The M5xi is internally configured around two independent power amplifier sections combined with a dedicated preamplifier stage. Its fully discrete power amplifier employs a low-distortion Darlington output stage using Musical Fidelity’s established circuit configuration.

The amplifier topology and PCB layout have been developed from technology used in the company’s TITAN and M6-series amplifiers. Careful optimisation of the circuit layout reduces electrical imbalance and minimises the amount of corrective feedback required.

Improved Power Supply and Internal Shielding

The main transformer and power supply PCB are enclosed within a metal shield to reduce electromagnetic interference inside the chassis. This provides a cleaner operating environment for the sensitive preamplifier, digital and phono circuits and is particularly beneficial to the high-gain moving-coil phono stage.

The digital and HDMI circuitry is physically separated onto dedicated boards with its own linear power supply, helping prevent high-frequency digital noise from interfering with the analogue amplifier stages.

MM and MC Phono Stage

The M5xi includes a newly developed phono stage supporting both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges. Compared with the MM-only stage of the previous M5si, the new design uses improved shielding, circuit layout and isolation to reduce noise and distortion.

Separate MM and MC gain settings allow the amplifier to work directly with a broad range of turntable cartridges without requiring an external phono preamplifier.

Modern Digital Connectivity

Digital connectivity has been substantially expanded. The M5xi provides optical and coaxial S/PDIF inputs together with a USB-C input supporting digital audio up to 24-bit/192kHz.

An HDMI eARC input allows a compatible television to be connected directly to the amplifier, making the M5xi suitable for systems where the same high-quality stereo loudspeakers are used for both music and television sound.

Dedicated USB Power for External Streamers

A 5V/2A USB-A output provides a dedicated power supply for compatible external network streamers and other low-power USB devices. The output uses its own transformer winding and linear power supply stage, allowing a compact streamer to be powered directly from the amplifier without an additional external power adapter.

Home Theatre Integration

A dedicated home theatre bypass allows the M5xi’s power amplifier section to drive the front left and right loudspeakers in a multi-channel system while volume control is handled by an AV receiver or processor.

The variable preamplifier output can also be used for bi-amplification, an external power amplifier or active subwoofer, while the fixed line output provides an additional connection for recording equipment or a dedicated headphone amplifier.

Precision Analogue Volume Control

The low-noise analogue preamplifier uses a high-quality Burr-Brown stepped attenuator. Compared with a conventional potentiometer, the stepped design provides more accurate channel matching, particularly at lower listening levels, helping maintain stable stereo imaging and balanced output between the left and right channels.

Built for Long-Term Hi-Fi Systems

The amplifier is housed in Musical Fidelity’s substantial all-metal construction with a heavy front panel machined from extruded aluminium. In addition to providing mechanical rigidity, the metal chassis acts as electromagnetic shielding for the internal circuitry.

With powerful analogue amplification, MM/MC vinyl playback, modern digital connectivity and flexible home cinema integration, the Musical Fidelity M5xi is designed as the central amplifier for a high-quality stereo system capable of accommodating both traditional and contemporary music sources.
