The Astell&Kern PD20 is a premium high-resolution digital audio player designed for listeners who want not only exceptional sound quality, but also extensive control over the way their music is reproduced. With its Quad-DAC architecture, three selectable amplifier classes, personalized hearing optimization and tactile real-time sound adjustment, the PD20 makes it possible to tailor the listening experience to the user, the headphones and the music.

Quad ESS ES9027PRO DAC Architecture

At the heart of the PD20 are four ESS ES9027PRO digital-to-analogue converters operating in an independent Quad-DAC configuration. By allowing the DACs to operate separately, the architecture helps minimize inter-channel interference and improves signal separation, clarity and spatial definition.

Astell&Kern’s proprietary TERATON ALPHA technology further optimizes power management, noise reduction, amplification stability and signal delivery. The result is a clean, highly detailed and naturally balanced presentation that remains faithful to the original recording.

Triple Amplifier Architecture

The PD20 offers three selectable amplifier operating modes: Class A, Class AB and Hybrid. Each mode provides a different balance of tonal character, efficiency and driving performance.

• Class A delivers a rich, smooth and densely textured presentation with minimal signal distortion.
• Class AB combines excellent efficiency with stable dynamics, clarity and precise detail.
• Hybrid blends the refined tonal character of Class A with the efficiency and power of Class AB.

A dedicated physical slide switch allows the amplifier class to be changed immediately without navigating through software menus.

Adjustable Class A Current

When Class A or Hybrid amplification is selected, the amplifier current can be adjusted between High, Mid and Low settings. This allows the PD20 to be optimized for headphones and earphones with different sensitivity and power requirements.

The High setting maximizes power delivery, dynamics and soundstage scale. Mid provides a balanced combination of density, detail and long-term listening comfort, while Low reduces background noise and is particularly suitable for sensitive in-ear monitors.

Personal Sound Tailored to Your Hearing

Developed in collaboration with Audiodo, the Personal Sound system analyzes the hearing characteristics of the listener’s left and right ears independently. Following a guided hearing test, the PD20 creates a personalized sound profile that compensates for individual differences in hearing sensitivity.

Dedicated measurement earphones are included for completing the hearing test accurately. Personal Sound processing supports audio playback at resolutions of up to 32-bit/192 kHz.

Audiosphere Spatial Sound

Audiodo Audiosphere expands conventional two-channel recordings into a more immersive virtual sound field. Four selectable presets — Subtle, Balanced, Immersive and Echoic — make it possible to adjust the sense of space according to the recording and personal preference.

Audiosphere can be used with music and other stereo content and supports playback at resolutions of up to 32-bit/96 kHz.

Sound Master Wheel with 160-Step Adjustment

The dedicated Sound Master Wheel provides direct tactile control over bass, midrange and treble. Each frequency range can be adjusted across 160 individual steps from -8.0 dB to +8.0 dB, allowing precise tonal adjustments without interrupting playback.

The Audiodo Equalizer also includes a Tilting function, which shifts the overall tonal balance towards lower or higher frequencies while preserving the fundamental character of the music.

Enhanced Signal Alignment

Astell&Kern’s proprietary ESA, or Enhanced Signal Alignment, technology is designed to minimize group delay. By aligning different frequency components more precisely in the time domain, ESA helps improve clarity, timing and overall coherence.

Advanced Digital Audio Remaster

Advanced DAR is Astell&Kern’s second-generation Digital Audio Remaster technology. Before upsampling is applied, the signal passes through the Virtual Sound Extender, which reconstructs harmonic information that may have been lost from the original audio data.

The restored signal is then processed by the DAR engine, providing a more natural and refined upsampling process while preserving the musical character of the original recording.

Seven Selectable DAC Filters

The PD20 offers seven digital DAC filters, allowing the transient response, roll-off behaviour and tonal presentation to be adjusted according to personal preference. Available options include minimum-phase, linear-phase, fast roll-off, slow roll-off, apodizing and low-dispersion filter modes.

Native DSD512 and 32-Bit/768 kHz Playback

The PD20 supports bit-to-bit PCM playback at resolutions of up to 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD playback up to DSD512. Its extensive format compatibility includes WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3, OGG, APE, AAC, ALAC, AIFF, DFF and DSF files.

Internal storage capacity is 256 GB, while a microSD card slot supports cards with a capacity of up to 2 TB.

Powerful Balanced and Unbalanced Outputs

The PD20 provides a 3.5 mm unbalanced headphone output and a 4.4 mm five-pole balanced output. Maximum output reaches 5 Vrms through the unbalanced connection and 10 Vrms through the balanced output under no-load conditions.

The 3.5 mm connection can also operate as an optical digital output, while the USB Type-C port supports charging and connection to Windows and Mac computers.

Wireless Connectivity

Dual-band Wi-Fi supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity includes support for Qualcomm aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC codecs.

The integrated Bluetooth Sink function allows music from a smartphone or another external Bluetooth device to be transmitted to the PD20 and reproduced through its high-quality audio circuitry.

Six-Inch Full HD Touchscreen

A large 6-inch Full HD+ touchscreen with a resolution of 2160 × 1080 provides clear album artwork, intuitive navigation and comfortable access to the player’s extensive sound adjustment features.

The aluminium body follows Astell&Kern’s Sound Lab Control design concept. Separate top-mounted wheels provide direct access to volume and sound tuning, while physical switches allow immediate control of amplifier class and current settings.

Long Battery Life and Fast Charging

The integrated 5,770 mAh lithium-polymer battery provides approximately 14 hours of playback under standard test conditions. USB Power Delivery 3.0 fast charging allows the battery to be fully charged in approximately four hours.
