T+A PS 3100 HV Power Supply

The T+A PS 3100 HV is a high-performance external power supply designed to maximise the performance of the A 3100 HV power amplifier and PA 3100 HV integrated amplifier. Rather than simply adding more power, it physically separates the energy supply for the power output stages from the amplifier’s sensitive input and voltage-gain circuitry.

Dedicated Power for the Output Stages

When connected to a compatible amplifier, the PS 3100 HV assumes responsibility for supplying the power output stages. The amplifier’s own internal power supply can then concentrate exclusively on the input and high-voltage gain sections, reducing the possibility of output-stage current demands influencing the more sensitive analogue circuitry.

1200 VA Transformer

At the heart of the PS 3100 HV is a substantial 1200 VA transformer engineered to provide the current reserves required by the A 3100 HV and PA 3100 HV under demanding dynamic conditions.

The external power supply is connected through the dedicated M-23 Special Powerlink connection, creating a clear division between the amplifier’s signal-processing stages and the high-current output section.

240,000 µF Reservoir Capacity

The power supply uses an array of 24 custom-developed high-performance capacitors with a total reservoir capacity of 240,000 µF. The capacitors are connected in parallel to minimise internal resistance and inductance, allowing stored energy to be delivered rapidly when the music demands high instantaneous current.

T+A specifies that the capacitor bank can provide up to 1200 joules of stored energy to the power stages, giving the system substantial reserves for large dynamic peaks.

Processor-Controlled Soft Start

The large transformer and capacitor bank could otherwise create a very high inrush current at switch-on. To manage this, the PS 3100 HV uses a processor-controlled soft-start system that limits initial current draw and gradually charges the capacitor bank.

Large Precision Meter

The front panel features a large analogue-style meter developed to match the visual design of the A 3100 HV. It is not purely decorative: the display can be used to monitor either the stability of the supply voltage or the current being delivered to the amplifier’s output stages.

Physical Separation for Lower Interference

Moving the high-current power supply into a separate chassis helps isolate charging currents, transformer fields and thermal effects from the amplifier’s sensitive audio circuitry. This separation is central to the design philosophy of the PS 3100 HV and is intended to preserve consistent amplifier behaviour regardless of loudspeaker load.

Reference HV-Series Construction

The PS 3100 HV follows the substantial construction of T+A’s HV Series, with a full-size 46 cm wide chassis and a weight of 38 kg. It is available in Silver 47 or Titanium 64 finishes, both with a black ventilation grille cover.
